Polk’s Meat Products’ Effort to Aid Mississippi Military Family Relief Fund
MAGEE, Miss. -- With thousands of Mississippi military reservists serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations overseas, many family members are left behind to carry on, often experiencing a financial hardship as a result. Leadership at Polk’s Meat Products of Magee is aiming to help some of the neediest of these families through an effort the company will launch in May.
Between May 12 and July 4, Polk’s will donate a portion of its sales to the Mississippi Military Relief Fund. The fund, established by the Mississippi Legislature in June 2005, assists Mississippi families that experience a financial hardship as a result of a family member who is a member of the Mississippi National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves being called to active duty as a result of acts of terrorism.
To participate, customers who purchase any Polk’s Meat product can return the UPC code from the label to a collection box at one of nearly 200 participating supermarkets across the state and Polk’s will contribute a portion of the sales to the fund.
“These individuals who are serving our country are giving up their lives, families and businesses to protect us while we go about our everyday lives,” said company chairman John Polk. “It is up to us to help take care of our fellow Mississippians, to step up to the plate and do what we can to support these families.”
Since the program’s inception, more than 125 families have received assistance from the relief fund for needs including house payments, utilities, school supplies, insurance and food, among others.
The emergency needs of eligible families are considered on a case-by-case basis says Sgt. Maj. (Ret) Ron Graves, fund coordinator. “The minute someone deploys away from home, the car breaks down or some other emergency happens,” said Graves. “We’re able to look at these situations and help in times of emergency.” The fund is supported completely by donations.
“We want to do everything we can to spread the word about this special fund and to encourage the people of Mississippi to join with us in this effort,” said Polk. “Even if they don’t support the fund through our efforts they can still support the fund with a direct donation.”
